Beach Days!

Something quite new for us this summer was the easy ability to get to the beach whenever we wanted.  We live about 7 miles from Boston Harbor but to get to a beach is usually about an hour's drive.  Still totally worth it.  We went pretty often and hope to be able to go even more next year.

Our first trip was actually a day in May where the temperature randomly hit 95 degrees.  (Which looking back now, is shocking as I don't think it really got past 80 more than a few times for the rest of the summer.  I kept waiting for the summer heat to kick in.  And yes, there were days that the humidity was miserable but still, not the summer heat and sun I look forward to.)  My kids and I headed up with some friends to Wingaersheek Beach.  It was before Memorial Day so parking was free and the place was packed.  But still, it was the warmest beach day we had all summer and it was a perfect spot for kids.  The water stays shallow very far out so they were able to run around and play easily.

Jonny modeling her new swim gear for the summer.  Sass.
We had to park in an overflow field as the parking lot was so full.  It's hard to tell from the picture, but that is my car parked sideways against that pine.  We were parked so close to it that I'm sure I scratched my car and there was no way we could get in and out on that side of the car.  And the dirt path there had barely enough room for a single car to drive through.
Atticus had actually been asking to go to the beach since January.  And Jonny is sure she's Moana, so of course she was in heaven.
Seriously, this sass.
Playing with our cute friend, Jack, who went right along with her Moana games.
I doubt it's really visible, but there's a lighthouse on that far away land behind Atticus' head.
The beach where we spent the most time was Nahant.  This day Dan was actually able to come with us and we were there all day.  We love this beach because it's not usually too crowded, it's very big and calm, and there are always tons of seashells to find.
Sandcastles
So proud of their finished creations
Kite flying.
Important business  being discussed.
Somehow, despite tons of sunscreen reapplication, Atticus, Dan, and myself (though not Jonny) all got pretty fried.
Another day at Nahant
His little friends, Blake and Christian.
Jonny loves relaxing in the sun.
He thought he was so cool borrowing this from one of the bigger boys we were with that day.
And just yesterday we had what I think will probably be our last beach trip of the summer to Good Harbor Beach.  It was a bit colder and windy, but there was a little stream leading into the ocean that the kids spent most of their time in.  Plus the weather made for some pretty cool waves.  There were even some actual surfers as the day went on.
We watched this awesome sandcastle being built.
And then very patiently watched it be destroyed by the tide without being allowed (by the crowd of people watching) to help the destruction in any way.  Here we are with our Walker friends standing on the remains of the castle.
Until next summer, beach days.
