Oh dear, I had a kid. Be prepared for there to never be anything else on here again except Atticus updates. Because good grief this kid is cute!
So we went to the midnight showing of Hunger Games clear down at Thanksgiving Point. (I have no idea why) I had been feeling miserable all day and with knowing I'd be up that late for the movie I had gotten a sub for the next day (Friday). I had three baby showers that Saturday so Dan and I just decided it would be easier to stay down there through Saturday. Anyway, movie was awesome despite being massively uncomfortable. We went to sleep at Dan's parent's house in South Jordan and got there around 3:00 in the morning, I think. We'd been there for about 10 seconds when my water broke. I didn't think it had. Just chalked it up to weird pregnancy stuff because I was only 36 weeks along. But about an hour later when I woke up again I realized I needed to call the hospital. I was in no pain at all. My doctor happened to be the one on call and he told me that since I wasn't contracting, I could probably make it up to Logan if I wanted to try for it. Dan had bronchitis/pneumonia and had just taken his prescription cough medicine to help him sleep. He was a champ and we made it to Logan in just over an hour. We didn't need to rush though because once there, we sat around forever. Turns out I was contracting but not strong enough so they had to basically induce my labor and it took about five hours before contractions even got strong enough for me to feel like I should wake up Dan, who was trying to sleep off his cough medicine. My contractions got super bad before I could have an epidural because I still wasn't dilating. My body apparently doesn't know how to have a baby. So I was dying and Dan was being so good to help me.
Anyway, you don't need all the details but I finally got an epidural around 4:00 and those things rock. My leg was so dead I kept touching it and wondering what it was. Baby's heart rate kept slowing down during contractions so they put me on oxygen and guessed the cord was around his neck. It was, but he was fine. He was also face up for most the day but managed to roll over before he came. Finally they let me push and that went for about an hour and a half. When they brought the doctor in (about 7:10pm), he also brought someone from the NICU and a lung specialist as baby was preterm, but then he came out at 7 pounds 1 oz and screaming his head off and those two just quietly left the room.
They put him up on my tummy all covered in yuck and he immediately peed on my hand and I didn't even care. I'm not one of those people who uses their blog as a journal for the whole world to read. So I'll just say, it took about two seconds of me holding him there on my stomach before I was bawling. I can't explain the happiness. I can hardly stand it. He's beautiful and perfect and in the hours after he was born, he looked like the shorter of those old men muppets that mock everyone. I hadn't eaten in over 24 hours and they brought me some grape juice, which may just be the best thing I have ever tasted (I probably drank a gallon of it over the next two days at the hospital) and then my parents, who had been in the waiting room for a couple hours sent in some steak and potatoes (as per my request) from Texas Roadhouse. It was delicious. An hour later, they brought me upstairs and my parents got to come meet him. We still hadn't officially named him. That didn't come until the next day sometime.
I think the rest I'll just do in pictures.
Before Contractions Got Bad
I took this one for my dad.
Dan Dancing About To Entertain Me
I kept seeing weird shapes reflected in the light. The pope appeared once.
Look at that cone head!
My favorite picture of the whole day. I'm sad he had to wear that mask though.
My hair was super awesome. The kid loves sticking out his tongue.
Old man muppet!
Meeting grandma
Meeting grandpa
Me and baby no-name-yet.
His feet are huge!
First bath. The kid hates it every time!
But he loves when daddy washes his hair. Only when daddy does it though.
He's gorgeous.
You know you're jealous of how cute he is. And I get to keep him!
Oh and here's a lovely video of said bath. Best scream ever!
